“Quick Simple Flavorful Humble Tofu Dish”
This is another humble dish but healthy and flavorful. Tofu is often a staple for any vegetarian diet because the ground soybeans that make up tofu; provides an important plethora of nutrient – protein. Although almost everyone is familiar with tofu, not all is familiar with “pressed tofu.” Unlike the ubiquitous normal tofu, pressed tofu is regular tofu that has been “pressed” to drained of excess liquid thus has less moisture and with a much firmer texture. One variation of such Tofu is infused with Five-spice powder. Five spice powder is an aromatic blend of finely milled spices, including ground Star anise, Cinnamon, Szechuan peppercorns, Fennel seeds, Cloves, and occasionally Cardamom. While this recipe is basically a vegetarian dish, U can easily transform this into a non-vegetarian dish by adding some julienne lean meat. Here’s The Viand’s take on “Stir-Fried Five-Spice Dry Tofu“.
- Five-spice dry Tofu – slice to abt. a centimeter thick. Roughly chopped Red Chili and Onion.
- Sugar, white pepper, a touch of Oyster sauce, Sesame oil and a dash of Shaoxing wine. All to taste. ** Note : Just dash/pinch of everything, if U prefer a stronger intensity of an ingredient flavor, simply add a little extra of that ingredient/spice – no rocket scientific measurement here. Always taste your Seasoning !!!
- Step 1 : Start by sautéing the chopped Onion with some Garlic till aromatic in medium heat. Add the sliced Tofu and cont. to sauté for abt a min or two.
- Step 2 : Add a little water, bring to boil and then turn heat down to simmer for abt 3-5 mins, just to allow the Tofu to soften a little. Add chopped Red Chili and sliced Scallion and all the Seasoning Ingredients. Crank up the heat and render the water down. Voila, ur plate of savory “Stir-Fried Five-Spice Dry Tofu” is ready to be served hot.
